Sushil Kumar Solanki is an Indian freestyle wrestler. He won a bronze medal in Beijing Olympics 2008, world wrestling championships in 2010 and a silver medal at the 2012 London Olympics. He is the first Indian to win back to back individual Olympic medals and first Indian to achieve the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award in the sports category. Wrestler Sushil Kumar was seen as a judge in MTV’s reality show Roadies X4. He is all set to make an appearance in Star Plus’ MasterChef India Season 5.

Biography

Sushil Kumar was born on 26 May 1983 in a Hindu Jat family in Baprola. He got trained at Akhada wrestling school in the Chhatrasal Stadium from the age of 14. Currently, he is an Assistant Commercial Manager in the Indian Railways. His father and cousin Sandeep are his inspiration in wrestling. Even though he is financially weak, it did not object him to make a career in wrestling. He handed the Queen’s Baton Relay in 2010 Commonwealth Games Opening Ceremony and has won the gold medal in 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Olympics medallist Sushil Kumar has taken coaching from Gyan Singh, Rajkumar Baisla Gurjar and Satpal Singh. The former wrestler Satpal Singh was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award of India, in 2015. Satpal has trained Sushil for the Beijing Olympics 2008 and London Olympics 2012.

Family

Sushil Kumar was born to Diwan Singh and Kamla Devi. His father was a DTC bus driver and mother is a housewife. Due to the financial position, his cousin Sandeep stopped competing as the family could support only one wrestler.

Wife/Marriage

Sushil got married to Savi in 2011. She is the daughter of a well-known wrestler Satpal Singh. She is also a tennis player and played at the national level. The couple has twin boys.

Career

After his training at the akhada, Sushil’s first success came at the World Cadet Games in 1998 where he won the gold medal, followed by a gold at the Asian Junior Wrestling Championship in 2000. In 2003 he has also won the bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships and a gold at the Commonwealth Wrestling Championships. He won a silver medal at the 2012 Summer Olympics, becoming the first person to win two Olympic medals for independent India. Sushil also won the gold medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He was awarded the Arjuna Award in 2006 and a coveted Padma shree by the Indian Government in 2011.
